Matsufuji Fall/Winter 2026 / FW26 at Rakuten Fashion Week Tokyo entitled “DIGNITY”
Matsufuji’s collection this season draws inspiration from the “Proletariat Trilogy” by Finnish filmmaker Aki Kaurismäki—Shadows in Paradise, Ariel, and The Match Factory Girl. His films depict the quiet lives of those on the margins of society: stretches of silence, repetitive labor, and modest hopes. Even within systems shaped by efficiency and consumption—where the rhythms of everyday life are easily overlooked—people never relinquish their dignity or hope.
Matsufuji FW26 / Fall/Winter 2026 collection seeks to render that quiet strength and universal beauty visible throughclothing. Grounded in the structure of workwear, the garments are elevated through precise tailoring. Jackets feature action pleats at the back, a subtle reference to the functionality of labor garments, while cotton linings and natural canvas interlinings bring integrity to the garmentfrom within. Styling informed by the attire of cleaners and manual workers is also incorporated, turning attention to those who quietly sustain the fabric of daily life. Their presence is gently reinterpreted within the collection. Leather work jackets are treated with a nubuck finish, creating a matte surface reminiscent of factories and workshops. Jumpsuits inspired by work uniforms contrast a rough, brushed exterior with refined interior textiles, expressing the tension between the realities of labor andan inner dignity.
Materials center on durable wool and cotton, complemented by softer fabrics blended with silk and cashmere. This interplay of ruggedness and delicacy reveals a quiet beauty embedded in the everyday. The palette is anchored in black, navy, and beige, punctuated by pure white, suggesting a faint light of hope within the realities of labor. “DIGNITY” reflects on the human dignity found in often-overlooked moments of daily life. Through clothing, it articulates both an inherent quiet strength and a subtle question posed to society.
