Oscar de la Renta Spring Summer 2023 Collection during New York Fashion Week

Oscar de la Renta Spring 2023 has figuratively spring from the earth inspired by Tulipomania, a period during the Dutch Golden Age of the 1600s when the cost of tulip bulbs soared to astonishingly high levels. Many financial experts consider it to be the first speculative bubble. In fact, some have compared this 17th century inflation to the cryptocurrency mania of today. Intrigued by the fact that a humble blossom could generate such a frenzied passion, we began to explore the extraordinary flowers of the Netherlands.

In addition to the tulips, our research led us to the Dutch hydrangea, which blooms in different colors and scents. Their graceful, star-shaped beauty has been interpreted in fabrics rendered in ivory, limelight and soft blue, as well as in crystal embroideries, quilting and thread work. They make their appearance in fluid tops, voluminous skirts and flirty dresses.

Since butterflies helped carry both tulips and hydrangeas from Asia to Europe and beyond, we incorporated them into the collection. Monarchs float through illusion tulle caftans, skim across the shoulders of silk organza blouses and seemingly take flight from playful day dresses.

The exquisite porcelain vases created expressly to display the esteemed tulips served as further inspiration. We developed a toile print that draws from the vessels’ colors and designs, enhanced by our unique spin. The print is also applied to 3D thread work embroidery and a quilting group. Diffused shades of blue, inspired by iconic Delft porcelain, are carried throughout the collection.

The color palette continued to blossom following a visit to the Keukenhof one of the world’s largest flower gardens located in Lisse during tulip season. Delicate shades of meadow, wisteria, and peony make a definitive statement in chiffon blouses, luxe caftans, day dresses and coats.

Inspired by nature and heightened by imagination, the collection is boldly, unequivocally Oscar de la Renta.
