ABOUT ARTIST
Mala York
Mala York is the digital alter ego of an Italian artist based in Milan. Through the medium of digital collage, he embarks on an exploration of the fragile nature of masculinity.
Amidst the interplay of bodies, uncanny masks, and sci-fi helmets, Mala York unveils the concealed facets of manhood, capturing a fleeting moment poised to either transform into genesis
or spiral into apocalypse. In his tableau, each figure assumes the dual roles of author and victim, wrestling with their own inner monstrosity.
About Artworks
For me, it’s important to capture moments of unease that come before or after a moment of rupture, of abandonment. The characters I use are always masked men because I want to play with the concept of masculinity and its performance. In fact, everything started from the similarity between “mask” and “masc,” an adjective widely used in the gay community and especially on dating apps. To recreate emotional tension, my characters are always situated in abandoned and solitary spaces.
The research for untitlab® revolves around the fragility of masculinity, through emotionally impactful events. There are characters that hesitate before pressing the button of an electrical device, others who collapse and remain paralyzed in the face of a house fire. In the piece featuring the fighting clown, I aimed to freeze the moment when the protagonist dominates his adversary, casting a sadistic glance into the camera before defeating him.
As for the group image, only one character is concerned about what’s about to happen, while the rest of the group participates without even noticing him.
In contrast to the previous piece, the collage with the boy on the stretcher depicts both characters dealing with a collapse, a demolition, with the one on the stretcher unable to see, hear, or speak, while the other remains still, waiting for his companion to disappear.
Finally, the last artwork on the stairs is immersed in a calm atmosphere. As everything crumbles around, the character remains peaceful, reading the newspaper alone.
