Jeanne Friot FW24 / Fall/Winter 2024-2025 presents COMING OUT at Paris Men Fashion Week
From shadow to light,
From dispossessed narratives to situated love discourses.
Speaking about lesbian loves differently: speaking of joy and thrills, of the ordinary and extraordinary aspects of life together. Finding queer words, words to express desire, butterflies in the stomach, union, and inventing worlds where we learn to love each other away from heteronormative clichés that slowly suffocate us.
Far from being utopian, this quest for elsewhere, nuances, and a revolution in love scenarios is central and involves art. Alice Coffin, Virginie Despentes, bell hooks, or Monique Wittig: each in their own way has paved the way for a new narrative of queer loves. They have turned off the straight narrative; what about fashion?
For the FW24 / Fall/Winter 2024-2025 season, Jeanne Friot invites us to take control of the amorous narrative, using her own story as a starting point, hybridizing it with archetypal figures to build counter-narratives (a wardrobe-reflections?). Entitled “Coming Out,” the collection speaks of herself and Delphine. It tells their love story, questions the lesbian “we” formed by a Fem and a Butch — a duo whose romantic narrative has been invisibilized and fantasized with stereotypes by the straight world.
Coming Out invites everyone to make their voice heard in romantic discourse, to turn off repressive melodies. To unfold a complex and nuanced imagination of lesbian love, Jeanne Friot constructs a plural and fluid wardrobe: both real and dreamed, known and unexpected, hybrid, and theatricalizing stereotypes forged by the patriarchal representation system.
Jeanne’s femme fatale coats take on dramatic volumes, with fur rising upwards, giving them a theatrical appearance, while the paint stains on Delphine’s work jumpsuits multiply and transform into ornaments, and her lumberjack shirts morph into jackets.
Designing the wardrobe of a couple also means questioning the tension between the self and the we: what one leaves of oneself, what one gains from the other. What is retained, what is changed, and what merges into a third wardrobe. Thus, throughout the collection, hybrid pieces telling the fusion of wardrobes, and the violet symbol of lesbianism, color a long wool coat and tint pants.
Jeanne Friot FW24 / Fall/Winter 2024-2025, the codes of the Jeanne Friot wardrobe assert themselves and serve as landmarks in this amorous revolution: recycled and accumulated belts become a motif printed on dresses and T-shirts, feathered pants come in black, and kilts split and overlap.
Coming out is moving from shadow to light.
Coming out is telling one’s story and no longer allowing desires to be dictated.
Coming out is embracing the light and shining a light for those still waiting in the shadow.
Coming out is saying: “When women love each other, men do not reap.”
This “Coming Out” has been sponsored by MAC Cosmetics, who signed the makeup.
