Stone Island Exhibition on Frieze Los Angeles
STONE ISLAND PRESENTS ‘SELECTED WORKS ‘982 – ‘024’ EXPERIENTIAL EXHIBITION ON THE OCCASION OF FRIEZE LOS ANGELES
15th February, 2024, Milan This February, Stone Island will stage its first ever major US archival exhibition in Los Angeles, coinciding with Frieze Los Angeles which will run from 29 Feb to 3 March. The exhibition Selected Works ‘982-‘024 will bring to the US rare and previously unexhibited pieces, such as the first comprehensive overview of the Stone Island Shadow Project. Selected Works ‘982-‘024 will also express Stone Island’s belief in “Lab-Life” – community in tandem with production – with pop up stores and a café run by various local Los Angeles friends of the brand.
The exhibition will coincide with the Frieze Los Angeles art fair- which is taking place at Santa Monica Airport – where Stone Island is the Official Partner of Focus, the section dedicated to younger galleries.
Selected Works ‘982-‘024 will take place at Buttercup Studios, Culver City. The exhibition opens with a monumental display of 42 archival pieces, representing important milestones in the history of Stone Island. A further display will highlight 12 Reflective jackets, including from the ‘992 collection when Stone Island first researched reflectivity. Then, an installation will highlight Stone Island Pure Metal Shell jackets, with 35 examples on show. Later in the exhibition, seven rare pieces from the Stone Island Prototype Research Series will be displayed.
Selected Works ‘982-‘024 will feature the largest ever retrospective of the Stone Island Shadow Project. From 2008-2021, Stone Island Shadow Project was a collaboration between Stone Island and Errolson Hugh and Michaela Sachenbacher ACRONYM® design studio. For the first time, pieces from across the entire collaboration will be displayed, offering further insight into Stone Island’s research methods through production and community. Continuing the collaboration theme, Selected Works ‘982-‘024 will also include a display of Stone Island’s various collaborations with brands such as Supreme, New Balance and NikeLab.
The Stone Island community is at the heart of Selected Works ‘982-‘024, with a program of screenings and talks that will take place during the run of the show. A highlight of this will be the premiere of Infinite Colours, a feature-length documentary by Ken-Tonio Yamamoto about the workers and their processes at Stone Island’s headquarters in Ravarino, Italy. Also screened will be Jeremy Elkin’s short film The Compass Inside, which draws links between the global Stone Island community. A program of talks will include appearances by Chris Gibbs, Liam MacRae, Chris Black, and many others.
Guests will be invited to linger in Selected Works ‘982-‘024, with gathering spaces run by local partners from Los Angeles. The Selected Works Café will be run by Community Goods and feature Rocky’s Matcha. Meanwhile, the Selected Works Gift Shop will be run by Better Gift Shop, with selections chosen by local guest curators.
Book curation will be by Wrong Answer, and Record curation will be by Blue Sun Records. A selection of Stone Island vintage pieces will be curated by 194 Local, while artists prints will be available by Joy Orbison, Gio Estevez, Grotesk, Michael Thorpe and Kosuke, with art objects by Euka Ceramics and Sharif Farrag. Local DJs such as Jacob Rochester, Bianca Lexis, will play sets throughout the run of the exhibition.
At Frieze Los Angeles, Stone Island will be the Official Partner of Focus, offering each of the participating galleries a bursary contribution towards each exhibitors’ stand fee. The Focus section is dedicated to emerging galleries, each founded twelve years ago or less. Participating galleries in the Focus section of Frieze Los Angeles will include Ochi, showing artist Lilian Martinez, and Sow & Tailor, featuring artist Javier Ramirez.
