The terms “blue-collar” and “white-collar” emerged as general labels for types of occupations. Blue-collar refers to jobs directly involved in production, such as construction and manufacturing, which often require physical labor. White-collar, on the other hand, refers to non-production jobs like office work and research, typically involving mental labor. Other categories include pink-collar for professions predominantly held by women, such as childcare and housekeeping; green-collar for environmental jobs; gold-collar for entrepreneurs and consultants; and grey-collar for managerial positions that blend blue and white-collar aspects.
The term “blue-collar” is believed to have originated in 1924, when a newspaper in Alden, Iowa, The Times, suggested, “If office workers are referred to as white-collar, then it is fitting to call manual laborers blue-collar.” Denim and chambray, which were common materials for workwear due to their durability and ability to conceal dirt, became the basis for the term.
As we approach 2025, a century later, diverse work styles and lifestyles have become the norm. WANSIE, a brand inspired by the history of workwear and functional clothing, creates unique daily uniforms. For Wansie Spring Summer 2025 / SS25 collection, WANSIE reinterpret iconic workwear and functional items from the past 100 years, presenting them as special daily uniforms. WANSIE embrace the concept of “Colorless Collar,” symbolizing inclusivity and diversity without the boundaries of profession or community.
