By seamlessly fusing elements of sports, culture, performance fabrics, and heritage crafts—such as using 3-dimensional jacquard fabrics, innovative technologies to create woven labels from wood pulp and oyster shell, and incorporating the traditional craft of Chunzai flowers in the Olympic entrance uniforms to emphasize grassroots strength — The Chinese Taipei team uniforms are created by coherently integrating, and celebrating, key aspects of local culture and art. Paving the way for a more conscientious and inspired future fashion industry.
Artistic Collaboration
Chou worked alongside contemporary Taiwanese artist, Paul Chiang. By blending Taiwan’s mountainous landscape with the shimmering ocean to create a fabric print that paid tribute to Taiwan’s natural beauty and resilience.
An optical illusion transforms the words “Chinese Taipei” into “Cheer on” when read from the side was created by typography designer Kokia Lin. This graphic was digitally printed in 3D and adorned the polo shirts.
Cultural Elements
Taiwanese national treasure, the artisan Yan Yu-Ying, incorporated her banana fiber woven fabric for the belt and shoe uppers. An ancient textile tradition that remains in Taiwan, this traditional skill originates from the indigenous Kavalan culture and was used to make clothing and reusable objects. Justin Chou also invited flower weaving artisan Lin Pei-Ying to create chest pins depicting the national flower plum blossom and the “canola flower,” symbolizing encouragement, pursuing dreams, and fearlessness, conveying blessings to Olympic athletes.
Sustainable Production and Supporting Taiwan’s Craftsmanship Chou’s partnership with Taiwanese textile giant New Wide Group allowed the use of advanced low-carbon, waterless printing technology when converting ‘Mountain Range of Taiwan’ (2012) into a pattern printed directly onto textured fabric. The fabrics used in other elements of the uniforms, such as the polo shirts, offers breathability and ensures athletes stay comfortable during performances. Chou continues to utilize Taiwan’s fabric technology and heritage crafts in the custom accessories too, the shoes feature eco-friendly bio-leather and banana silk, while the belts and other accessories showcase intricate traditional weaving techniques.
The uniforms not only represent Taiwan’s fashion industry on an international stage but also pays homage to the country’s cultural and artistic heritage. These uniforms don’t just represent athletic excellence; they’re a celebration of Taiwanese culture, art, and sustainability.
