Antonio Marras Fall/Winter 2025 / FW25 at Milan Fashion Week presents THE REDISCOVERED OPERA – A MELODRAMMA IN TWO PARTS 1892. Melodrama is A theatrical drama sung with an instrumental accompaniment (nowadays commonly known as opera).
LA BELLA D’ALGHERO, a melodramma from 1892. Intrigued, they launched their investigation. Only in Pesaro, in fact, and in the National Library of Bologna—no trace in Sardinia. The opera, with music by Giovanni Fara Musio and a libretto by Antonio Boschini, had been staged for the first and only time in the Concert Hall of the Rossini Music School in Pesaro. No score survived, only the libretto with dialogues and some explanatory notes. The original score was painstakingly reconstructed.
Story of Melodramma, The story is a classic mess of her, him, the other man and the other woman, but it’s somewhat more complicated as vying for the affections of Efisio are two sisters. Eulalia, a young, beautiful commoner (the chorus describes her as a fleeting star of our town), is loved and returns the affections of the handsome rifleman Efisio, however, she is promised to the fisherman Gavino, while her sister Rosalia, envious and resentful, loves Efisio, who despises her in return. Rosalia (blinded by love) convinces her sister Eulalia to leave Efisio in order to honour her commitment to marry Gavino, to then take Efisio for herself. But the handsome rifleman, heartbroken, refuses to marry Rosalia. The plot is further complicated by the chorus of townsfolk, who serve as witnesses to the whole affair, sometimes enthusiastic, sometimes astonished, and Luisu, Efisio’s father. In the end, the protagonist, deprived of Eulalia’s love, attempts a dramatic suicide by throwing himself off the promontory of Capo Caccia. HORROR! The melodramma ends with the chorus’s final word.
