Graphpaper 10th Anniversary present Basic Collection and invites Ill-Studio to present FORM FOLLOWS FICTION.

To mark its 10th anniversary, Graphpaper invites Ill-Studio to present FORM FOLLOWS FICTION, a project that explores how garments evolve over time, accumulating layers of cultural significance, shaped by their environments, and ultimately becoming something they were never intended to be.

Merging fragmented narratives, post-minimalist structures, and monochrome soundscapes, the installation blurs the line between seeing and perceiving, presenting objects as active containers of personal identity and collective symbolism. FORM FOLLOWS FICTION proposes that form is not fixed, but a mutable surface onto which meaning is projected shaped by invisible systems and mental frameworks.

The space features blank forms: black textures, monolithic structures, white noise, and drifting sine-wave frequencies. The installation responds to its surroundings, shaped by the environment, the attention, or inattention of its audience, and the cultural or personal associations that emerge. In this context, form is presented as fluid, contingent, and in constant flux.

The spatial design draws from the architectural philosophy of Graphpaper while resonating deeply with the conceptual and anti-disciplinary ethos of Ill-Studio’s practice. The spatial design takes cues from the architectural philosophy of Graphpaper’s origin—the Aoyama flagship store—and draws further conceptual influence from When Attitudes Become Form, a landmark 1969 exhibition proposed by curator Harald Szeemann. “We want to share the moment when form is born from narrative with our guests.” This vision lies at the heart of the project.

The Aoyama flagship store, opened on February 27, 2015, has long embodied Graphpaper’s core spatial philosophy— displaying fashion, art, and product design side-by-side as equally valued works. Its gallery-like layout, featuring black canvas drawers and a symmetrical structure, forms the foundational inspiration to this Paris installation. ILL-STUDIO builds upon this framework, offering a contemporary reinterpretation of the modernist maxim “Form Follows Function.” Instead, FORM FOLLOWS FICTION investigates the idea that perception is not inherent to design, but layered onto it. Aligned with Paris Men’ s Fashion Week, a time when the city draws global attention from across the fashion industry, this project seeks to engage in thoughtful dialogue, both within the industry and beyond.

Ahead of the pop-up event, Graphpaper has released visuals for its Basic Collection. Under the theme “Distinct yet Normal” the collection pursues value in consistency, with understated garments designed for contemporary urban life, that stand apart from the transience of trends. Shot against stark, architectural backdrops, the visuals highlight the collection’s clean, structured silhouettes and reductive approach.
