The 2027 Spring/Summer / SS27 collection of ssstein embodies a sense of morning optimism. One day at daybreak, Kiichiro Asakawa, founder and creative director of ssstein, found himself standing by a lakeside, enjoying a profound sense of calm. “Time seemed suspended. In the lightly misted air, I anticipated the first rays of the sun illuminating me, layering colours, as though I were a blank canvas. I pictured a spectrum of delicate hues emerging from the pale golden light,” Asakawa recalls, still enchanted by the memory. “A few days later, I came across Remembered Words, a series of watercolour paintings by Roni Horn. The accumulation of coloured dots in her paintings evoked exactly the same sensation.” This experience inspired a palette of light yellow, almond green, blush pink and powder blue, further enriched by subdued tones such as taupe, greige and reddish brown.

For instance, a nylon blouson of light yellow, exclusively developed for ssstein by Olmetex, was garment-washed and resulted in a time-worn tone and an airy hand feel. This process also yielded the desired puckering effect between parallelstitches of the garment. As for deerskin, he opted for drumdye rather than pigment-dying, which results in a deep, uniform tone and a supple touch. The newly developed soft denim, composed of cotton and hemp, exemplifies Asakawa’s pursuit of chromatic nuance: Ring-dyed yarns were chosen for the relief-like effect of light and shadow, while the over-dye was applied for the muted tones. Among all these plain colours, the only pattern of the season is a grey-toned check, offering a perfect expression of colour gradation. One version is woven by the long-established British mill Moon, enhanced by the suppleness of its wool-linen composition.

One of ssstein’s latest key designs is the mid-length coat made from Pontoglio’s corduroy. The fabric was washed and then tumble-dried to emphasize the wale. Its silhouette is boxy without appearing flat, with darts on the top of the sleeves giving structure. Even though the season’s silhouettes are more classic and easygoing than usual, connoisseurs will particularly appreciate what lies inside the garments. Some designs are lined with silk-rayon flannel, offering ultimate comfort and a sense of discreet luxury.

Lightness is also a key element. The softly shaded washable silk is crafted into a shacket, a fluid outer halfway between shirt and jacket. It can be layered with the authentic shirt of the same fabric. Another total look proposal is a combination of a skipper shirt and easy pants made of extremely soft linen. The relaxed but not slouchy pants are actually of a hybrid design: Single pleats, the elastic and draw-string waist and a fly front are all applied into one style. Women’s pants are more contemporary. An extra-wide, full-length style has slits on the sides, while a running short is crafted from super-light wool with leather piping.

The season’s statement accessory, a testament to Asakawa’s enthusiasm for exceptional craftsmanship, is a hand-stitched seven-fold tie. It can be paired with a shirt made of the matching super-light wool, either from Canonico or Delfino, both among Italy’s finest mills.
