Shayne Oliver 20 Years of Fashion History with Museum Ebay Archetypes

Shayne Oliver celebrates 20 years of fashion history with Museum Ebay Archetypes.

Presented as part of Reference Studios’ INTERVENTION VI during Berlin Fashion Week, the exhibition at Schinkel Pavillon brought together vintage garments selected by Shayne Oliver from eBay with archival video and moving image, exploring the references and cultural histories that have shaped his practice.

During Berlin Fashion Week, INTERVENTION VI, the sixth edition of Reference Studios’ fashion and culture platform conceived and curated by Mumi Haiati, presents MUSEUM, the latest chapter in Shayne Oliver’s ongoing archival series celebrating 20 years of his creative practice. Hosted at Schinkel Pavillon and realised in partnership with eBay and REFERENCE STUDIOS, the exhibition explores the references, archetypes and cultural histories that have shaped Oliver’s work through a curated selection of vintage garments sourced from eBay.

Rather than presenting a retrospective of his own archive, Oliver has selected vintage garments that embody the visual language, silhouettes and cultural codes that have informed his practice over the past two decades. Through these pieces, MUSEUM considers fashion as a living archive, tracing the movement of ideas, identities and influence across time.

Spanning two floors, the exhibition offers two distinct but interconnected experiences. On the ground floor, eBay Archetypes presents a curated selection of vintage garments organised around foundational categories including Denim, Leather, Sportswear and Tailoring. Upstairs, MUSEUM takes on a more archival form, pairing garments with moving image and archival video to provide historical context and reveal the stories behind each piece. Together, the two floors explore the relationship between archive, memory and contemporary fashion. The exhibition extends beyond the gallery through an integrated digital experience.

Every garment is accompanied by a QR code, allowing visitors to access editorial lookbook imagery of the featured piece and browse similar vintage garments curated by Shayne Oliver. These selections are available to purchase through the REFERENCE STUDIOS eBay shop, creating a direct connection between exhibition, archive and retail.

Presented as part of INTERVENTION VI, MUSEUM reflects Oliver’s evolving multidisciplinary practice, which increasingly focuses on archiving, exhibitions and cultural research. The project brings together exhibition making, digital commerce and cultural storytelling, demonstrating how fashion can function simultaneously as object, archive and living cultural record.
