MM6 Maison Margiela Spring/Summer 2027 / SS27 at Milan Fashion Week
Clothes come with instructions, even when nobody writes them down. A shirt goes on the torso. A skirt starts at the waist. The neckline circles the neck; the shoulder line sits on the shoulders.
For SS27/ Spring/Summer 2027, MM6 questions these rules through clothes made for everyday life and people on the move. Both women’s and menswear are subjected to the same practical question: what happens when familiar things are worn differently? The answers differ.
In womenswear, garments move around the body. A shirt becomes a skirt, its shoulder line now sitting on the hips. A V-neck top can be worn as a bottom, or remain a top. A skirt turns into a dress, the waisline pushed high. Pieces are folded, shifted and fastened again, their original construction still visible. The point is not to make a shirt stop looking like a shirt, but to see what else it can do. Sometimes two versions of the same garment are put together to make one look. Elsewhere, an archetype simply moves to a different part of the body, with panels added where necessary to make the new position work. The transformation is practical before being conceptual. Enlarged disproportions of dolls’ clothes provide another point of departure. Garments appear shrunken, with simplified closures.
In menswear, the same logic moves sideways. On shirts, collars and button plackets shift from the centre towards the side of the body. The wardrobe itself remains straightforward and utilitarian: tailored suits, biker jackets, shirts, T-shirts, trousers. What changes is where things begin and end. Construction is simplified, too. Reduced closures, snaps, shrunken proportions and easy fabrics make garments immediate to put on, take off and reposition. Overdyes, starch treatments and painted, papery surfaces alter otherwise familiar materials. Normal clothes, specific treatments.
A collaboration of MM6 Maison Margiela SS27 / Spring/Summer 2027 with Havaianas applies the same principle to an archetype worn by millions, with the number six becoming a design mechanism rather than just a number. The flip-flop splits into toes, grows an extra one, or multiplies itself into six differently shaped soles stacked one on top of the other.
