Romeo Gigli Spring/Summer 2027 / SS27 at Milan Fashion entitled “LE ONDE DEL DESTINO”

The sea as a realm of memory—a symbolic space where distance does not equate to disappearance, and time flows according to the irregular movement of the waves. This evocative concept gave rise to Le Onde del Destino (The Waves of Destiny), the Romeo Gigli SS27 / Spring/Summer 2027 collection designed by Alessandro De Benedetti. Through the figure of the sailor, the collection explores themes of absence, anticipation, and the enduring nature of bonds.

The maritime theme is not translated into literal references; instead, it permeates the collection as a visual and emotional code. Stripes, button details, wide collars, nautical-inspired trousers, knots, and fastenings draw upon a familiar aesthetic—one that De Benedetti lifts from the conventional to reinterpret through the unique language of Romeo Gigli. The uniform sheds its regulatory function, while the strictness of nautical attire gives way to fluidity, transparency, and a sensuality achieved through subtraction.

Silhouettes of Mario Gigli SS27 / Spring/Summer 2027 emerge from the interplay between sartorial precision and the instability of movement. Off-the-shoulder jackets, elongated shirts, fluid trench coats, and deconstructed tuxedos define a vertical silhouette, animated by twists, layering, and asymmetry. Trousers echo and alter the proportions of naval uniforms; skirts wrap around the body; and dresses alternate between sleek structures and fluid volumes that shift and transform with every step. Red-and-white or blue-and-white stripes run across shirts, trousers, and dresses, introducing a graphic rhythm that moves with the body without restricting it. In fabrics with a crinkled surface, the regularity of the pattern shifts, taking on an almost kinetic quality as it undergoes the visual distortions caused by water and wind. In the Lacci Dress, ruffles and drawstrings break up the garment’s continuity and reshape its volume. This same principle recurs in the Lacci Top and Lacci Skirt, where the lacing acts as a structural element: it holds the fabric in place, adjusts proportions, and reveals the process by which the garment takes shape around the body. Tailoring finds expression in the Atena Jacket, the Submarine, and the tuxedos, all defined by clean lines, unexpected necklines, and volumes that rethink the relationship between body and structure. The Doctor Who Trench—crafted from washed satin or embroidered voile—sheds the weight traditionally associated with outerwear, taking on the lightness of a robe. The dresses introduce a more ethereal dimension. Lullaby, Coral Reverie, and Like a Virgin use silk-viscose chiffon and embroidered voile to create continuous movement, marked by diagonal draping, cut-outs, and uneven hems. Arden uses cotton tulle to build a layered silhouette; Jezebel pairs embroidered linen with sheerness; and Glide, in black lace and tulle, introduces a deeper, more nocturnal tone.

Chiffon, embroidered voile, linen, lace, and tulle define the collection’s lighter elements, while denim, twill, and cotton provide structure for silhouettes inspired by tailoring and maritime themes. Washed satin creates fluid surfaces with a soft, muted sheen; crinkled stripes break up the pattern’s uniformity, lending the material an irregular character. The color palette draws inspiration from a seascape captured in its shifting atmospheric moods. White, off-white, nude, and beige tones converse with light blue, dusty blue, and navy. Sage green introduces a more muted, aquatic note; the pink of washed satin evokes twilight light, while red acts as a visual accent. Black embodies the collection’s more rigorous and dramatic elements.

With Le Onde del Destino (The Waves of Destiny), Alessandro De Benedetti explores the relationship between permanence and transformation. Nautical clothing elements are reimagined in terms of proportion, function, and meaning, while Romeo Gigli’s stylistic heritage resurfaces through a sensitivity to volume, the interplay between body and material, and a concept of femininity that defies any single definition. Memory does not take the form of nostalgia but becomes an active component of the design.
