A Personal Note 73 (APN73) Autumn Winter 2021 – 2022 collection at Milan Fashion Week Men’s

For the second season, APN73, acronym of A PERSONAL NOTE 73, the Chinese brand, which was established in 2019 through a partnership between Italian creative director Andrea Pompilio and multinational JNBY and debuted in Milan calendar in July 2020 on the occasion of Milan Digital Fashion Week edition, will present its collection at Milan Menswear Fashion Week. The brand will join once again the Milan’s digital palimpsest, created by CNMI in response to the current constraints to physical events. “I am extremely pleased to be back with APN73 to Milan which represents the city I am most creatively close to and whose heritage menswear calendar best reflects my aesthetic vision”. Inspiration for APN73 AW21 stems from the Italian movies directed by Bernardo Bertolucci, one of the most iconic Italian talent and visionary man. “We selected references for frames from his movies and combined these with paintings of Francis Bacon, which were a powerful source of obsession and inspiration for the same Bertolucci” said creative director Andrea Pompilio “The blend and contrast between these influential figures personalities represented the initial stage of the creative process for the new collection.”
A PERSONAL NOTE 73’s AW21 collection is presented through the lenses of fashion movie VIRTUAL-REALITY.TV which, set on Hangzhou, was partially shot in JNBY’s newly inaugurated headquarters designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano. “While realising the movie for Milan fashion week, we thought we wanted to translate this traditional inspiration in a very contemporary fashion film depicting real life transplanted in a virtual setting”. Deeply embedded in the Italia 60’s culture, APN73 AW21 collection will feature oversize shapes a diverse and bold color palette combining bright yellow, orange and green and electric blue melted with hints of natural warm colours such as camel, chocolate, coffee and grey applied to a variety of winter fabrics spanning felted wool, technical wool and combined with the checked and stripe patterns signature of Pompilio.

APN73 was launched in 2019 by JNBY in partnership with Italian designer Andrea Pompilio and IBIC, as a young spin-off of the eponymous brand created by the Italian designer. APN73, an acronym of A PERSONAL NOTE 73, which plays on the homophony of the initials of Andrea Pompilio’s name. Indeed A PERSONAL NOTE 73, wants to retrace his creative path and represents a sort of “personal diary” of the designer’s cross-cultural experiences, starting from his year of birth, 1973. APN73’s aesthetics blends diversified cultures, high street fashion and artistic characteristics to reinterpret the classic in a playful way and with a contemporary twist. With a modern urban design that combines elegance, delicacy and pragmatism, the brand combines workwear and military uniform with traditional Italian tailoring and with contrastin colours and diverse elements, the design interprets a delicate aesthetic to create a high-end street style.
“I have always been attracted by cultural diversity and thanks to my creative collaborations, which took me first to New York and Paris and then to Asia, between Japan and China, I was able to explore the mixes of cultures. This partnership and the launch of the APN73 project have given me the opportunity to closely appreciate Chinese contemporary society and understand its emergent fashion trends” said the artistic director and co-founder Andrea Pompilio.
After the launch event in China, APN73 chose Milan for its international debut joining Milan Fashion week’s menswear calendar in July 2020 within Milan Digital Fashion Week.

Andrea Pompilio was born in Pesaro in 1973, in a highly creative environment. His father, was an architect and his mother, a passionate painter. His whole family has been involved in the clothing industry for generations. His grandparents owned several boutiques in Pesaro and played an important role in Andrea’s choice to become a designer. At the age of eight Andrea was spending a lot of time with his grandparents in the shops, where he developed a passion for tailoring as well as military style clothing, two key elements of his collections nowadays. After studying fashion design at Pesaro’s Art Institute, Andrea moved to Milan to have his Master’s Degree at Istituto Marangoni. In the following years, he racked up several collaborations with world-leading brands such as Prada in Milan, Calvin Klein in New York and Yves Saint Laurent in Paris and got the chance to travel the world while doing what he loves the most: designing.
In January 2010, Andrea launched his own collection for AW2010/2011 under the name ANDREA POMPILIO, and took part to several editions of Pitti Immagine Uomo as a special guest. He later won 2011 edition of Vogue Italia’s contest “Who’s on Next”. Year 2013 came with many positive changes for Andrea Pompilio: he began a collaboration with Japanese sportswear brand Onitsuka Tiger for a capsule-collection that includes footwear, apparel and accessories and then, was invited by Giorgio Armani to host his SS14 catwalk at ‘Armani Teatro’ for a remarkable debut at Milan Fashion Week. Not long after that, the Italian tailoring group Canali appointed him as creative director. Andrea Pompilio’s style is ironic, contemporary and international and so is his soul. He likes to play with lines, patterns and antithetical colours only to combine them with sartorial expertise, creating a great ‘Made in Italy’ product with an international taste.
