Shuting Qiu Fall Winter 2021 – 2022 collection at Milan Fashion Week

Chinese fashion house, SHUTING QIU, makes its return to Milan to present its Autumn/Winter 2021 collection within Milan Fashion Week official calendar. “It was particularly important for me to be in Milan this season cause I feel a huge distance has been growing between China and Europe. The pandemic has created a sort of disconnect and I felt I needed to fill this gap and alleviate this distance by joining Milan calendar from China remotely. I am always honoured to be part of Milan next to many internationally renowned luxury brands” said the designer.

SHUTING QIU AW21 fashion movie will feature an element of tradition and honour Chinese heritage. The film will be set in historical sceneries of Hangzhou, Shuting’s hometown, and shot during Chinese new year celebration. As a trait d’union to previous collections, SHUTING QIU AW21’s inspiration stems from figures of female artists. This season will pay tribute to the work of two contemporary creative figures, Swiss artist Miriam Cahn and London based Italian artist Viola Lanari.

Miriam Cahn has witnessed social conflict and violence in her life. In her view, the body is the battlefield of our lives. In her paintings, naked human bodies shine through bold fluorescent colours, colliding with the dull tones of the society around them. SHUTING QIU AW21 will feature a contrasting palette of fluo, bold shades of yellow, fuchsia and electric blue and calm, wintery shades of medium grey, charcoal and tones of blue extracted by Miriam Cahn’s dreamy paintings full of loneliness and restlessness.

In a new twist, the brand’s classic prints and check patterns will be combined with bright eco-fur applications on jacquard, revealing an even more confident and strong femininity. Jersey is introduced to add a subtle sporty touch. A more casual intent is also evident in the newly introduced bomber and down jackets shapes, which parallel the brand’s signature tailoring silhouettes, which became slightly more fitted this season.

Within the collection, also an accessories and jewellery capsule, inspired by Viola Lanariàs work. Through plasters installations, Viola Lanari’s art explored the concept of the unknown and the unpredictable and questioned how as human being we can deal with the unknown future. Viola Lanari’s work has shaped the design of SHUTING QIU AW21 jewellery, which will be released later in March. Irregular geometric shapes and rhythmic ups-and-downs surface show unlimited possibilities and unpredictable outcomes. Metal plates are applied through electroplating to 3D printed resins bringing sparkle to hard squared shapes to convey the exuberant and radiant, yet confident and determined, heart of the SHUTING QIU’s woman.

SHUTING QIU AW21 will uphold the brand’s quest for a more environmentally sustainable fashion through the introduction of eco-fur and the increasing use of up-cycled dead stock fabrics which makes for 70% of materials used in the collection.

Brand Profile

SHUTING QIU graduated from the Royal Academy of Fine Art, Antwerp in 2019, soon after establishing her eponymous brand and debuting in NYFW official calendar within the VFILES RUNWAY 10 winners contest in 2018.

The brand conveys a signature sense of femininity that features a “modern romantic” woman, powerful and independent while maintaining her soft identity. The SHUTING QIU woman dares to express herself with asymmetry and experimentation in silhouettes, often resulting in rich contrasting colours of silk jacquards, intricate embroideries, and juxtapositions of linear and floral prints.

Currently based in Shanghai, the Chinese-born designer constantly finds inspiration in travel, international films, art and literature. Since from the outset, Shuting’s creations pay homage to the free, romantic and neurotic spirit of art heroines such as Virginia Woolf and Pina Bausch.

Youngest finalist of BOF CHINA PRIZE 2019 and winner of Special Prize BIG AWARD in Japan 2019, the brand debuted on an international solo runway In Milan presenting SHUTING QIU SS20 with the support of CNMI. In 2020, Shuting was selected within the Arise Fashion Week international new talents and invited by Vogue Talents to join the World of Vogue Talents and joined again Milan Fashion week’s official calendar to present her SS21 collection. The brand collaborates with established retailers such as Browns, Joyce, SKP-S, Labelhood, Farfetch and Net-a Porter.
