Meditating on a decade of creation, the Études Spring Summer 2022 collection is the first chapter of a binary exercise in introspection. Across the Spring Summer 2022 and Autumn Winter 2022-23 collections, a deep exploration of the extensive research and development of the signature Études silhouette results in a new expression of the brand’s identity: one imbued with a collective notion of identity, freedom, heightened consciousness and artistic expression. Constructed in part through an exhaustive study of the archive, existing patterns, graphics and treatments are cast in a new light – honouring the emergence of the relaxed, subversive archetypes of Études’ decidedly postmodern vocabulary.
The results of this introspective approach yield a systematic wardrobe that posits pragmatic solutions for everyday life against instances of unabashed creativity. Tactile washes exhibit a ‘lived-in’ quality across categories, in a palette that spans pale mineral tones of putty, ochre and sandstone contrasted with flashes of Études blue and bright terracotta. Existing volumes reinforce a penchant for the oversized – roomy trenches, quilted vests, garment-dyed raglan raincoats, workwear denim and Prince of Wales checked tailoring retain the boxy forms of season’s past. Revisiting key graphic devices, motocross logos and flames are emblazoned across shirting and tees, as bleached check shirting and the ‘Nevermind’ slogan return alongside camo trousers and baggy denim. Patchwork jeans are up-cycled from jacquard deadstock, fusing chain-link motifs with the stamped E-T-U-D-E-S logo in a bold branding exercise that continues across zipped hoodies embroidered with souvenir patches.
Reflecting on the origins of Études Blue, a landmark collaboration with the Estate of Yves Klein sees a suite of garments designed with the legendary French artist’s anthropometric and monochromatic works in mind. Focused on peripheral zones of the body, the shared iconography of International Klein Blue is celebrated in flocked and weathered treatments on outerwear, shirting and denim, whilst photographic documentation of his 1960 performance piece ‘Leap into the Void’ appears on a simple white tee.
The Études eyewear collection returns for Spring Summer 2022 with three new acetate frames including a bug-eyed oval shape and two subtle rectangular forms in a range of transparent seasonal colours. A new footwear partnership with British bootmakers Solovair sees the heritage brand’s iconic Goodyear welted boots and shoes updated with contrast white topstitching and an oversized Études heel tab. A line of nylon baggage with Manhattan Portage reprises a series of Études souvenir patches across backpacks, satchels and crossbody bags.
FILM & LOOKBOOK NOTE
The collection film by Gregoire Dyer and lookbook by Arnaud Lajeunie trace the roots of Études founders Aurélien Arbet, Jérémie Egry and José Lamali back to the French countryside, in particular to the alpine hinterland of Grenoble, France. A disjointed narrative follows a collective of local youths from the city limits into the Vercors Massif, showcasing the collection in a series of moving tableaux featuring a cast of Études characters the protagonists meet along the way.
