The Academy New York Fall Winter 2022 – 2023 at New York Fashion Week

For Winter 2022, The Academy New York adds menswear to its luxury ready-to-wear offering. Starting from the street and bringing together all different influences and backgrounds, mixing them with music and art, the brand’s seventh season is born. Photographs by Watanabe Katsumi and “Buffalo: Ray Petri” were big influences. The collection picks up on pieces that recur in those pictures, like boxy club shirts and baggy fatigue trousers that come in a suiting floral jacquard. From cutting the sleeves off the Long Chelsea Jacket and leaving the shoulders fucked up and distressed to stamping felt lettering down the leg of an 80’s red sweat suit; spelling out this season’s graphic, Angel. Buffalo meant classic. But it also signified resistance and is used to describe a rebel or rude boy/girl—which is no new trope for The Academy New York. Why? Because they’re not here-today-gone-tomorrow fashion.

 The Academy New York is a luxury women’s and menswear brand by former Obedient Sons founder and designer, Swaim Hutson. The brand is rooted in menswear, and seasonally available in unisex sizing. Each collection consists of classic pieces, tailor-made in the USA and Portugal. Small production, limited stock, designed and crafted locally to last you a decade. 

The Academy New York was first conceived by Swaim Hutson in 2013 as an Instagram feed of collected feelings, dreams, moods, inspirations and icons that quickly resonated with the art, design, fashion, and music communities—notable account followers include Marc Jacobs, Katy Grand, Jefferson Hack, FKA Twigs, Mert Alas, Simon de Pury, Dakota Johnson, to name a few—and amassed an organic following of nearly half a million followers in a little under 3-years time. 

To more effectively speak to the account’s cursively varied audience, between 2013 and 2015, The Academy New York expanded its brand to entail a number of subsidiary accounts: @TheAcademyNewYork.Art, @TheAcademyNewYork.Music and @TheAcademyNewYork.Space. 

In 2015, The Academy New York released its first range of branded lifestyle merchandise of collegiate-inspired T-shirts, sweatshirts, hoodies, caps and small accessories. That same year, the brand also released a series of limited edition products that scale from sculptural raw wax candles in collaboration with Joya Studio to exclusively branded pieces with LUISAVIAROMA.com and tour merchandise for singer, songwriter Sharon Van Etten. Collaborations also include MADE Fashion Week X The Academy New York as well as art curation for Soho Grand and Edition Hotel’s. 

Fashion design has always been at the core of The Academy New York and for Fall/Winter 2019, the company introduced its first women’s ready-to-wear collection and continues to present new collections seasonally. This season, for Fall/Winter 2022, The Academy New York is proud to expand its offering to the menswear market.
