“MOVEMENT AND SYSTEM”
The soft, yet bright intrigue of Zankov acts as a beacon, drawing the eye to a further layer of more complex knit engineering, fastidiously observed production, and finer points of reference than may be initially obvious at first sight.
The very construction of a single Zankov garment offers an insight into the two, complementary roles of devout technical detail, and pursuit of color theory. Fifteen years of working with absolute precision across the art form and craft of knitwear, has allowed founder, Henry Zankov, a level of expertise in this métier that is a joy to encounter, cherish as objects of design, and wear.
This season, reference points range from Russian Avant-Garde Constructivism, the artists Varvara Stepanova and Malevich, communist-era utilitarianism and a constant investigation of geometry; each acting as flourishes of a design and aesthetic vocabulary that lifts the signature knitwear beyond, and into new categories of tailoring, luxury leisurewear and outerwear. The graphic patterns this season have movement as they are all knit on the bias.
Hand knit styles deepen the element of craftsmanship and experimentation this season. Sweaters developed with yarns derived from heirloom breeds from the Lot region of France. The sheep are cultivated by a collective of women who raise the stock and farm the land, a practice built over 25 years ago. The color of the wool is in its natural form, the “wheat” is from the breed named “Bizet” and the deep black is called “Noir du Velay.” This specific natural wool is untreated, maintaining its rustic, built-in strength, and resistance.
The majority of the merino wool in this season’s collection is completely non-mulesed, whilst all other woo, mohair and alpaca fibers are responsibly produced. The shadow windowpane tailoring is sourced from a mill in Prato, who specializes in recycled fabrics.
