Marimekko Fall/Winter 2025 / FW25 at Copenhagen Fashion Week
Marimekko FW25c/ Fall/Winter 2025 runway show celebrates an interjection of color amidst former terminal building in Copenhagen. Marimekko FW25 runway show at Copenhagen Fashion Week explored the relationship between art, architecture and fashion. The show was held at the formerly public Terminal 1 building of Copenhagen airport, designed by the renowned Danish functionalist Architect Vilhelm Lauritzen in the 1930s.
The protected venue emphasized the intimate atmosphere of Marimekko Fall/Winter 2025 presentation, reflecting the core ideals of functionalism and modernism. Marimekko worked with Danish musician Mikkel Hess, whose soundscape orchestrated the dualism of Marimekko FW25 collection, highlighted by the striking mood shift from monochromatic tones and patterns of darkening winter nights to an interjection of joy and exuberant colors.
Since its founding in 1951, Marimekko has become synonymous with bold and imaginative use of color, ranging from subtle and tonal to daring and vibrant. The joyful and unexpected combinations lay at the very core of Marimekko’s art of printmaking, where timeless archival patterns are reintroduced in new colorways to reflect Marimekko’s design ethos of using the dress as a canvas for art. The Fall/Winter 2025 collection references monochromatic tones associated with darkening winter nights, including cinnamon and cocoa brown, spruce green and deep greys, which are set against contrasting tones of exuberance, among which scarlet red, blush pink, spearmint and rich purple. Textured materials, such as bouclé and mouliné add an element of craft and natural surface against the softness of wool and the crispness of cotton, which are seen in the season’s pleated woven dresses, chunky knitwear, denim and sumptuous outerwear.
“The collection explores the dialogue between light and dark, with color providing an interjection of joy. The Vilhelm Lauritzen terminal felt like the perfect backdrop for the dualism that we play with this season, but it also reflects the modernist and functionalist design thinking that Marimekko has always embraced. We are extremely honored to have been able to welcome our guests to this iconic and private Copenhagen landmark and celebrate Marimekko’s art of printmaking inside this architectural masterpiece”, says Rebekka Bay, Creative Director at Marimekko.
For the entire year of 2025, Marimekko explores its over-arching conceptual theme: The Anatomy of a Flower, which celebrates some of the lesser-known floral prints from Marimekko’s archive.
The hero print of the collection is Tumma by Maija Isola from 1970, which embodies Marimekko’s deep fascination of color by showcasing the same pattern in multiple styles and through entirely diUerent expressions in color variation, demonstrating how timeless prints work equally well in monochromatic shades and daring color combinations.
Note on the show space, The Vilhelm Lauritzen Terminal was constructed in 1939 and designed by Danish architect Vilhelm Lauritzen. The terminal was Denmark’s first dedicated airport building, created to meet the demands of growing commercial aviation. It originally served as the airport’s main terminal but is now used for charter flights and receiving foreign heads of state arriving at the airport. The terminal is notable for its architectural significance and modernist design, combining simplicity with passenger-oriented features. In 1999, the terminal was moved 3.8 km on flatbed trucks to preserve its architectural legacy. The building was listed on the Danish registry of protected buildings in 2000.
