Matsufuji Spring/Summer 2027 / SS27 at Tokyo Fashion entitled “The Shape of Time”
In 2025, Matsufuji traveled to Hungary. Beyond the well-known tourist destinations, he encountered buildings and furniture that had continued to serve their purpose through the passage of time. Extended structures, traces of repair, and forms altered to meet changing needs. These objects did not exist to preserve an ideal state of completion; rather, they endured by adapting to change. What left the strongest impression were the traces of human activity embedded within them. Worn corners, faded surfaces, and irregular repairs blended seamlessly into the landscape—not as flaws, but as evidence of continued use and care.
For SS27, these observations became the starting point for a reconsideration of garment construction itself. Rooted in workwear and tailoring, the collection deconstructs garments from their conventional completed form and reconstructs them through the reassignment of function and structure, creating new silhouettes and perspectives.
Materials include repeatedly washed wool and cotton, alongside dry-textured silk and linen, chosen for their ability to evolve through wear. Tailored jackets feature a traditional three-roll-two construction, allowing the top button to be fastened and transforming the garment into a workwear-like silhouette. This adaptability reflects the architecture encountered during the journey—structures that continued to evolve while remaining in use.
Details throughout Matsufuji SS27 / Spring/Summer 2027 collection reference extended building materials and traces of repair, including layered pockets, inserted panels, and reduced collar constructions. Imperfection and evidence of mending are translated into the language of garment structure. An original double-faced jacquard fabric combining linen and cotton was also developed. Wrinkles, creases, and the way materials soften through wear are embraced as part of the design. Rather than pursuing a fixed and uniform completion, the garments are intended to continue evolving through their relationship with the wearer.
The color palette consists of black, olive, ice grey, and beige. Inspired by Hungary’s stone architecture, weathered walls, and natural landscapes, these tones evoke a quiet sense of accumulated time. Rather than adding something entirely new, the collection focuses on reinterpreting and repositioning what already exists. It embraces absence, displacement, and irregularity—not as defects, but as conditions that can be resolved into new forms.
Matsufuji SS27 / Spring/Summer 2027 collection title, The Shape of Time, refers to the contours formed through the accumulation of time, traces of use, and continuous transformation. Memories shaped by everyday life, inherited values, and layers of time itself. SS27 reinterprets these elements as clothing, exploring how time leaves its mark and ultimately takes shape.
