Canali Spring Summer 2023 at Milan Men’s Fashion Week

For Spring Summer 2023, Canali takes a trip to the Italian Riviera. Liguria, to be precise, and its crescent-shaped coastline, home to a port picturesque in love-worn, sun-warmed pastels; gentle shores that bring the day’s catch home by sun-dappled twilight; and cobbled piazzette around every corner. Here is where the SS23 collection is born and lives; a place where purity is prized over pretension, where relaxation and elegance come hand in hand.

To take Canali’s gentlemen to Liguria, a new sartorial concept enters the Canali vernacular: ‘smartorial’. It’s casual, but its elevated and connects the realms of formal and leisurewear in a way that reflects how we actually pack and pair the clothes in our wardrobes. Now, more than ever, elegance is a state of mind, a happy place that our sartorial expression reflects rather than plans for.

With that in mind, the Ligurian palette plays protagonist throughout the SS23 collection in which everything – from design to production – celebrates 100% Made in Italy. Those powdery pink, sand and sage hues of the sea-facing fisherman houses appear on suiting and shirting. They are countered by terracotta outerwear and balanced by ivory and off-white trousers, creating a medley of separates that can be mixed, matched and called on with confidence. Elsewhere, tangerine and aquamarine come together in short suits and suede seam detailing on relaxed open-neck shirts.

This season, outerwear focuses on the overshirt and Shacket, two staples of a modern wardrobe that arrive in suede, linen and denim to create summer evening-approved pairings with chinos, trousers or jeans. They are produced in technical fabrics with a matt finish that imbues a modernity when paired with Canali’s natural noble fibres. Canali’s iconic bomber jackets, hooded or plain, come in suede with chevron embossing or in linen-silk. Lightweight peacoats are on hand to take care of spontaneous summer showers.

Knitwear takes its cue from the fishing shores, with sailor-striped two-tone boatneck and woven crew-neck sweaters satisfying the perennial search for the perfect summer sweater in luxurious cotton and silk blends.

Suits are perfect for business or ready for aperitivo hour in Super 150 wool, solaro or stretch cotton-silk and linen blends. Shirting, meanwhile, is both subtle and special; everyday polo shirts are elevated in breathable crisp cotton with leather details, while more formal options are once again reinvented in noble linen and silk-blend fabrications, both fit for the elegant Ligurian lifestyle and beyond.

Throughout the collection, the 150-year anniversary of denim is celebrated, no better realised than in the iconic saharienne jacket, a silhouette that embodies the heritage of Canali and now traverses the city and Italian seaside escape. Jeans, bomber jackets and shirts complete the full Canali denim look.

Riviera outfits are enhanced by the finishing touches. A new canvas, suede and leather sneaker bridges the long Ligurian lunch and late-night divide; calf-skin sandals, in both plain and intrecciato finishes, have city and vacation appeal; and Canali’s beloved loafers and suede slip-ons ignite a spontaneity in the collection’s sun-sherbet shades.

To hand, a tote in canvas, nubuck and soft leather with an intrecciato strap completes the Ligurian summer wardrobe, ready to take the Canali gentleman to the coast both sartorially and in spirit.
