8ON8 Spring/Summer 2026 / SS26 at Shanghai Fashion Week entitled “RUNNER THE DREAMER”
Celebrating its eighth anniversary, 8ON8 presents its SS26 / Spring/Summer 2026 collection, titled “RUNNER THE DREAMER.” This season, designer Gong Li pays homage to the persistent dream-chasers, those forever in motion, continuing to build 8ON8’s distinct surrealist utopia amidst a fluctuating era.
8ON8 SS26 / Spring/Summer 2026 collection unveils a unique vignette: an otherworldly object descends over a metropolis, resembling a super-cultivated idyll. Country houses, flower fields, oversized produce, disproportionately scaled swans, and running figures coexist beneath airships and giant, guardian-like chili trees sprouting from the earth. In a moment, urban high-rises, trees, cottages, and field elements interlace chaotically. This fantastical, absurd world appears perilous yet thrives with vibrant harmony.
This narrative sets the stage for 8ON8 signature exploration of an absurd, fictional urban life. SS26 integrates city running culture with traditional hand-pleating and weaving techniques. Li Gong interprets the modern urban athlete—restrained in appearance yet unbound in spirit—through a surrealist lens. The inner yearning of the contemporary urban middle class for nature and the thrill of the chase is expressed through fluid garments with smocking embroidery and hand-woven leather running shoes, showcasing a perfect fusion of artisan craftsmanship and technical fabrics. Earthy tones like terracotta clash with vibrant neons, creating silhouettes that are both relaxed and dynamic. The clever incorporation of fresh, ethnic handicrafts into an urban commuter aesthetic conveys a sense of physical presence paired with a mind wandering freely. A continued reverence for sartorial experimentation is evident in fusing a traditional suit’s lining with a functional outer shell. Structured shirts are reimagined with A-line cuts and traditional smocking. Hand-woven, thin-soled leather sneakers break from convention, while everyday running shorts are injected with new life—their lightweight bounce and subtly upturned hems creating lines that blend an unique flair with modern movement. This design language, rooted in the mundane yet transcending the ordinary, builds a unique visual narrative central to 8ON8’s identity: distilling novelty from the everyday and housing poetic absurdity within rational structures.
Marking the upcoming 2026 Chinese Year of the Horse, 8ON8 collaborates with American outdoor footwear brand KEEN on a limited-edition shoe. Reinterpreting the classic JASPER silhouette in Rose Pink and Bishan Green, the design features an all-over suede upper with leather-appliquéd Pegasus motifs and tasseled heels reminiscent of a horse’s tail, capturing the mythical creature’s agile spirit. Additionally, vinyl records placed on the show seats drew notable attention. The cover artwork, depicting a contemplative ape adorned with pastoral patterns under a white airship bearing “GOOD 8ON8 YEAR,” evokes a whimsical vision of a hopeful future. Playing the golden record offers an immersive auditory journey through a curated compilation of all 8ON8’s runway scores from the past eight years.
With “RUNNER THE DREAMER,” 8ON8 uses surrealist strokes to construct an absurd yet harmonious ideal, blending craftsmanship with commuter-athleisure, and dynamic forms with experimental cuts. Within a rational framework, it carves out a poetic space for the contemporary urban wanderer’s mind to roam.
