LUAR SS27 / Spring/Summer 2027 began with a change of scenery. Instead of keeping to the familiar Manhattan fashion-week circuit, Raul Lopez brought the collection to Flushing Meadows–Corona Park in Queens, presenting beneath the Unisphere on September 14. The choice of location immediately placed the collection closer to the New York that has shaped Lopez himself, rather than treating the city simply as a backdrop for a runway show.

LUAR SS27 / Spring/Summer 2027 collection is titled Christopher Street Columbus, bringing two very different references into the same conversation. Christopher Street recalls the West Village street closely associated with LGBTQ+ history, while Christopher Columbus points to the history of European arrival in the Americas. Seen through Lopez’s perspective as a Dominican designer based in New York, the two references create a space where European history, queer New York culture and Caribbean identity meet.

That idea becomes easier to see in the clothes. Historical references, particularly from the Tudor period, are placed alongside contemporary tailoring and streetwear. The silhouettes can become exaggerated, while some looks move between traditionally masculine and feminine codes. Rather than reproducing historical clothing literally, Lopez uses those references as part of a modern LUAR wardrobe, allowing the past to appear in unexpected forms.

There is a sense of contrast throughout the collection, but it does not feel like the clothes are trying to resolve those differences. Instead, Christopher Street Columbus lets them remain visible. History sits alongside contemporary New York, while tailoring can shift into something more theatrical and expressive.

For LUAR, SS27 becomes a reflection of how different histories and identities can occupy the same city. By bringing the collection to Queens and filtering these references through Lopez’s own New York perspective, the designer makes the location and the clothes feel connected rather than treating the setting as merely part of the show.
