Thom Browne brought SS27 / Spring/Summer 2027 to The Shed in New York on September 15, closing the official NYFW SS27 schedule with a collection built around insects and metamorphosis. The idea was introduced through the presentation itself, with a large chrysalis surrounded by greenery at the center of the space and models appearing in forms that suggested caterpillars before the show gradually moved toward transformation.

What makes Thom Browne SS27 / Spring/Summer 2027 collection interesting is that the insect theme never completely replaces Thom Browne’s tailoring. At its core, the collection remains rooted in the sartorial language that Browne has developed for the runway: structured tailoring, precise proportions and an elegant approach to menswear. This is also where the collection feels different from the more commercial clothes one might encounter in the brand’s retail environment. The runway pieces function more like an exploration of Browne’s design vocabulary, allowing tailoring to become the starting point for something considerably more theatrical.

The clothes establish that foundation through familiar patterns and restrained colours. Grey dominates much of the collection, appearing through stripes and checks, while touches of blue and white provide contrast. Against this relatively controlled palette, the insect references become more noticeable. Ladybugs, butterflies, dragonflies, bees and ants appear alongside cocoons, protective netting and moss-like elements. Embroidery and other surface details turn these references into part of the garments rather than simply decorative additions.

One of the more striking moments comes through a black bridal dress marked by red accents around the body. The placement creates a deliberately sensual contrast against the idea of bridal purity. Read visually, it can suggest the end of virginity within the symbolism of marriage itself, making the dress feel less like a conventional bridal look and more like another stage of transformation within the collection.

That idea of change runs through the show without taking tailoring out of the picture. The insect imagery may become increasingly elaborate, but the clothes continue to rely on the discipline of Browne’s sartorial construction. The result is a collection where metamorphosis is expressed not only through butterflies, caterpillars or cocoons, but through the way a familiar tailored wardrobe is pushed into a more fantastical world.
