Maison Margiela Tokyo Celebrates The First Store Concept

Maison Margiela Tokyo Celebrates The First Store Concept. A new chapter of MaisonMargiela/folders celebrates the first store concept, Maison Margiela Tokyo.

5 November, Tokyo, Japan – 20 years ago, our first-ever store, Maison Margiela Tokyo Ebisu, relocated from a traditional minka in a leafy Tokyo district to a former electronics factory, a 5-minute walk away, at 2-8-13 Ebisu-Minami. To celebrate its 20th anniversary, dedicated the next chapter of the ongoing research and documentation initiative, MaisonMargiela/folders, to Maison Margiela Tokyo Ebisu, presented as a limited-edition ZINE distributed in newsstands across the district and in the store on 5 November.

This publication is the manifestation of months of study into the first-ever store, its evolution, and its community. Maison Margiela dove into the archives for information about its conception, gathered first-hand accounts from those there from the beginning (many of whom are still at the store today), detailed the history of the Tabi, interviewed the local Ebisu collectors Noritaka Tatehana and Kozue Akimoto, and Tabi restorer Kozue Akimoto, and commissioned local artists like Takashi Homma to document our shared home. Maison Margiela also made a dedicated Maison Margiela Tokyo manga, inspired by the history of the store’s location – an electrical products factory – created by renowned local manga artist Takehito Moriizumi.

As part of this celebration, the brand devoted the next chapter of Line 2 – the initiative for unexpected dialogue – to this space through an installation, “Unravelled Memory, Rewoven Future”, forming a creative dialogue between local contemporary artist Mio Suzuki and historic French tapestry manufacturer Les Manufactures Nationales – Sèvres & Mobilier National, open to the public from 5-15 November.

For the celebration, Maison Margiela Tokyo hosted a party with the community, including a special preview of the installation. The brand brought together the favourite spots in Ebisu, including live music by vinyl DJ Wataru Fukuyama, owner of the renowned Ebisu listening bar Bar Martha. Guests included international model and actress Tao Okamoto, actresses Non and Yuka Itaya, actor Noritaka Hamao, Kabuki actor Sennosuke Kataoka, ballet dancer Mizuki Nakajima, and Japanese contemporary artist Kotao Tomosawa, as well as actors and producers from the film The Colour of the Sun, all dressed in pieces from Maison Margiela Fall Winter 2026 collection. Renowned architects Kengo Kuma and Shohei Shigematsu were also in attendance.
