MARQUES’ALMEIDA Spring/Summer 2027 / SS27 at Milan Fashion Week

For Spring/Summer 2027, Marques’Almeida continues to explore the tension at the heart of the brand: between rawness and refinement, structure and movement, the everyday and the extraordinary.

Following recent seasons of evolution and a growing embrace of a more elevated language, SS27 pushes that conversation forward. Elegance is present, but never too polished or following the traditional or expected. Femininity appears throughout the collection, but it is disrupted, exaggerated, contradicted and grounded by the instinctive irreverence that has always defined M’A.

MARQUES’ALMEIDA SS27 / Spring/Summer 2027 collection plays with opposing ideas of proportion and silhouette. Sculptural volumes sit alongside long, lean shapes; dramatic peplums are paired with cargo elements and shiny sequins in masculine and slouchy shapes; frills interrupt tailoring and denim; floor-length skirts sit alongside more pragmatic pieces that resemble workwear.

Familiar M’A codes return and evolve: distressed denim, raw edges, asymmetric construction and deconstructed silhouettes meet satin, lace, sheer textures, brocades and richly worked surfaces. There is a sense of occasion running through MARQUES’ALMEIDA SS27 / Spring/Summer 2027, but one that refuses conventional ideas of dressing up. Dresses become deliberately excessive, and trains fall to the floor. Colour moves between deep black, beige and lavender tones, burgundy, sky blue and deep indigo. Prints and textures add on rather than coordinate, creating the feeling that pieces have been collected, layered and lived in rather than perfectly styled.

That tension extends to the casting and styling. As always, the M’A person is not one woman or one man. There’s a lot in between. Individuality remains more important than what the world told us perfection is supposed to be. Perfection is an unrealistic word. SS27 reflects a Marques’Almeida that continues learning and challenging itself without becoming restrained by the challenges of an independent label. The refinement of recent seasons remains, but so does the instinct to undo it: to roughen the edges, disturb the silhouette and leave something unfinished.

It is elegance on M’A’s own terms: emotional, imperfect and a little chaotic. Marques ‘ Almeida was created Marta Marques and Paulo Almeida who subscribe to the Helmut Lang school of thought where “fashion is about attitude not hemlines.” While their aesthetic evokes raw effortlessness, the pair’s technical sensibilities are revealed in the construction of each piece. Marta and Paulo took the natural course of combining talents while on the MA at Central Saint Martins in London – hitting the mark between impulse and consideration.

They launched MARQUES ‘ ALMEIDA in 2011 and showed their first two seasons under Lulu Kennedy’s platform – Fashion East, followed by NEWGEN Awards from the British Fashion Council enabling them to show at London Fashion Week where they took their first steps. In 2015 MARQUES ‘ ALMEIDA were awarded the LVMH Prize for Young Fashion Designers, as well as a British Fashion Council ‘British Fashion Award for Best Emerging Designer’ and grew exponentially, establishing the start of their long standing partnership with many innovative leading international retailers, and always supported by their loyal community. Prior to the pandemic were two collections officially endorsed and shown at Paris Fashion Week, followed by a return to London Fashion Week. 2020 saw the launch of the M’A KIDS line. Also that year highlighted the business’s visible commitment to sustainability, documented through the launch of the “M’A SUSTAINABILITY AND SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY MANIFESTO” and their “reM’Ade by Marques ‘ Almeida” line they kept focused in empowering the communities around them through projects like “See-Through” and “M’AKERS”.
